Tooth implants are an excellent dental solution for replacing missing or damaged teeth. Teeth implants are durable, long-lasting and look completely natural in the mouth, which is why they’re often called the best permanent solution for replacing missing teeth.
The procedure for teeth implants is completely safe but it does require some invasive dental work where the titanium implants will be placed directly into the gum in order to fuse with the jaw. In this article, we explain how the procedure for teeth implants work, what to expect as a patient, and the costs involved in a teeth implant procedure in Glasgow.
Teeth implants are made up of two main components:
The titanium screw that acts as the replacement tooth root
The cap or crown that is fitted on top to act as the replacement tooth
These two parts make up the tooth implant, however, due to the invasive surgery needed for the replacement tooth the cap or crown needs to be placed 2-3 months after the initial implant surgery takes place.
To have tooth implants fitted there are a few steps both the patient and the dentist must go through. At The Park Practice in Glasgow, we’ve broken these down into 4 different stages, outlined below.
The first step toward tooth implants is having an initial consultation and in-depth discussion with your dental implant dentist. We want to make sure that all our patients are comfortable and clear on their dental surgery, so we make the initial consultation a required part of every dental procedure we offer at our dental clinic in Glasgow.
This initial discussion also gives the patient an opportunity to ask any questions, clarify timeframes, understand the procedures and discuss pricing and payment options. After the initial consultation, the patient can then make an informed decision on whether they want to continue with the procedure, based on their dentist’s advice.
As the tooth implant procedure involves drilling into the gum and jaw, it’s essential that the patient’s jawbone is strong and healthy enough to undergo such a procedure. If the jawbone is found to be too weak or overly brittle, it may not be possible to move forward with the tooth implant surgery.
In order to assess this, your Glasgow implant dentist will take X-rays of your mouth, as well as initial impressions of your teeth, to better check your suitability for tooth implants.
In some cases, your dentist will also perform a CBCT scan to look closer at your jaw bone and ensure it is strong enough to proceed with the surgery. For certain patients the dentist will need to perform a bone graft to ensure the jawbone is strong enough to withstand the implant. If this is the case, the implant procedure will take longer than usual due to the healing process.
If your Glasgow dentist confirms that your mouth and jawbone is suitable for implant surgery, the next step will be to have the implant surgery.
This first surgery is also the most significant. It involves the titanium implant being secured into the mouth so it can act as a replacement tooth root. Patients require a local anesthetic for this operation and may experience some soreness and discomfort post-op.
As the surgery is invasive and involves a significant impact on the jawbone, the dentist will set a healing timeframe before the next part of the procedure can take place. In the meantime, you will be fitted with a temporary tooth cap before the more permanent replacement tooth is placed; usually 2-3 months after the titanium implant has been fitted.
After your mouth has fully healed from the initial implant surgery, your implant dentist will take another impression of your teeth to ensure your new replacement tooth fits perfectly in the mouth.
Patients will be given the option of a removable replacement tooth cap or a fixed tooth. Removable teeth can be easily removed by the patient whenever they choose, whereas a fixed tooth will be tightly secured to the titanium implant and will need a dentist to remove it if any problems occur.
This procedure will also include the placing of the abutment, which is a small metal post that attaches the replacement tooth to the titanium implant.
The procedure for fixing the replacement tooth is quick, simple and hassle-free. As most of the hard work will have already been done, this stage is normally a breeze for patients.
The main is to ensure the replacement tooth cap or crown feels comfortable in the mouth and is secure whilst eating and biting. It’s also important that the tooth matches the rest of your natural teeth and that you are happy with the final appearance of your new smile.
You may feel some slight discomfort after the tooth cap is fitted. If this discomfort increases or becomes unmanageable, you should contact your implant dentist immediately.
Of course, the cost of teeth implants will depend on the number of implants you require and where the implants are being placed in the mouth. It’s also important to consider additional costs for any extra treatment that may be needed (such as bone grafts, polishing or whitening).
In general, the cost of teeth implants can vary from £2000 - £4000.
