The Park Practice is a dental clinic in Glasgow with a specific focus on sports dentistry and protecting athletes' teeth. We’ve been honoured to work closely with local sports teams and have now become Official Partners with Glasgow Warriors professional rugby team, providing the full team with robust sports dental care and bespoke rugby gum shields to help protect teeth during matches and training.
We hope that this is only the start as we continue to develop our own and others' understanding of the importance of sports dentistry.
For the most effective protection possible when competing in high contact sports such as rugby, a custom-fitted sports mouth guard is necessary. Although standard, universal mouth guards will provide a decent level of protection to your mouth and teeth, a custom-fitted rugby gum shield will ensure the guard stays in place and comfortably covers all of your teeth.
The main benefits of custom-fitted rugby gum shields are:
All too often sports dentistry is overlooked by sports teams, athletes, trainers and parents. Although we’ve seen a recent uptake in the use of sports mouth guards, such as rugby gum shields, too many sports reject the use of sports mouth guards despite the serious risk of dental trauma.
The Park Practice has worked hard on communicating vital information on the importance of sports mouth guards to professional and amateur teams alike. Through our dedicated approach, we have been lucky enough to work closely with the Glasgow Rocks, one of the top professional basketball teams in Scotland.
Kieron Achara, one of Scotland's greatest ever basketball players, took an instrumental lead in this partnership, allowing The Park Practice team to create custom mouth guards for him to use during games and training. Since this initial sports dentistry partnership, the full Glasgow Rocks squad has followed suit, having seen the value that comfortable fitting, custom made mouth guards bring to professional basketball players.
Our goal at The Park Practice is to break the stigma of sports mouth guards so we can protect athletes’ teeth no matter what sport. Whilst we will continue to work closely on rugby dentistry and rugby mouth shields, we also hope to provide protection for more basketballers, footballers, and other athletes who operate without the use of mouth guards, despite the high risk of dental trauma.
The Park Practice’s founder and lead dentist, Mike Blackie, was a rugby player himself, playing for GHK and the Glasgow Hawks. Upon opening The Park Practice in 1999, Mike has worked hard to include sports dentistry as a cornerstone of the practice, with a high proportion of our patients arriving with sporting backgrounds and sports-related dental issues.
